Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - PRSI Conditions.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

142 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social Welfare the present position regarding PRSI and other such requirements in respect of unemployed persons who obtain two or three days work per week; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Unemployed people who obtain two or three days work per week are subject to the same PRSI conditions as employees generally. Private sector employees earning £25 per week or more are covered by Class A social insurance, which gives entitlement to the full range of benefits and pensions. The social insurance contributions for Class A are 5.5 per cent for employees, and 12.2 per cent for employers. If earnings are £60 or less the employees' contributions are waived.

There is also a health contribution of 1.25 per cent and an employment and training levy of 1 per cent. These are usually paid by the employee, but if the employee is a medical card holder, they are paid by the employer instead.
