Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Galway Theatre.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

432 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the proposals, if any, he has for a theatre in Galway city.

Ní bhaineann an cheist seo le cúrsaí Gaeilge ná Gaeltachta agus, de bhrí gur i mBéarla atá sí curtha, is sa teanga sin a thabharfaidh mé freagra inniu. Ba mhaith liom, áfach, go dtuigfí go soiléir go gcuirfidh mé fáilte i gcónaí roimh cheisteanna nó fo-cheisteanna trí Ghaeilge ar ábhar ar bith a thagann faoi chúram mo Roinne-se.

There is at present a long standing proposal from Galway Corporation to build a theatre in the Spanish Arch area of Galway city and an allocation of £1.5 million from the national lottery has been made available towards the project. Of this allocation, £95,000 has been released to date to meet certain site costs, and the balance is being held pending the submission of an acceptable plan by Galway Corporation.
I am currently seeking a submission from the Corporation which would expedite the project and I have indicated my personal interest in advancing immediately any reasonable proposals which the Galway Municipal Theatre Trust and the Corporation may have in bringing the project to fruition.
