Vol. 429 No. 7

Written Answers. - IRTC Membership.

Mary Harney

Question:

103 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if, in view of the fact that there are, at present, no representatives of AIRS, that is, the Association of Independent Radio Stations, on the Independent Radio and Television Commission, he will give details of the number of places he will allocate to the independent sector when a new Commission is appointed in 1993.

Under the provisions of the Radio and Television Act, 1988, members of the Independent Radio and Television Commission are appointed by the Government. The period of office of the current members of the Commission is due to expire on 16 October 1993 and I will be making proposals to Government on the membership at the appropriate time. However, I would point out to the Deputy that the members of the Commission serve in a personal capacity and not as representatives of any bodies of which they may be members.
