Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sewerage Schemes.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

48 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if he will ensure that the most ecological method of sewage management is employed when new systems are being installed.

The planning and design of sewerage schemes takes account of the best available technology, ecological effects and cost implications in determining the most appropriate method for the screening, treatment and disposal of sewage and sewage sludge. In addition, where the population equivalent capacity of a proposed treatment works is in excess of 10,000, an environmental impact statement is prepared in accordance with EC and national requirements.

With a view to developing a coherent and comprehensive national strategy on the treatment and disposal of sewage sludge, a study is now being undertaken by consultants who will report to my Department later this year.
