Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Live Register Analysis.

Noel Ahern

Question:

81 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give an analysis of the amounts received by those on the live register for the most recent period for which figures are available; the number who receive nothing, and are simply signing for credits; the number who receive weekly amounts of up to £10; the number who receive weekly amounts of £10 to £20; and any other recipients for which information is available.

According to the latest live register analysis, published by the Central Statistics Office there were 15,325 people signing for credits only at end January 1994 and 281,676 people in receipt of an unemployment payment.

Comprehensive details of payment amounts are not currently available on a nationwide basis. However, from some sampling of claims in receipt of payment at computerised offices in February of this year, it would appear that the numbers receiving less than £10 and between £10 and £20 in any week are relatively small. The sample suggests that of the total number of people in receipt of an unemployment payment slightly more than one-half of 1 per cent of claimants were receiving less than £10 and just over 1 per cent were being paid between £10 and £20. Just over 11 per cent of claimants in receipt of a payment were receiving between £20 and £50, 71 per cent were receiving between £50 and £100 and just under 16 per cent receiving over £100.
