Vol. 441 No. 1

Written Answers. - Raw Material Supplies.

Seán Power

Question:

172 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the percentages of raw material available in counties Kildare and Offaly in view of the proposal to build a peat-fuelled electricity generating station in the County Kildare/County Offaly region; and his views on whether the siting of the station will be determined by the proximity of the highest proportion of such supplies.

As part of the feasibility study into its proposal for a new peat-fired power station, Bord na Móna conducted a survey of peat resources available to them and are satisfied that the fuel resources required for such a station can be sourced mainly in Counties Kildare and Offaly and to a lesser extent in Counties Meath and Westmeath. The study estimated that over 36 million tonnes of peat can be economically produced in the region.

In their feasibility study, Bord na Móna have identified a number of factors which will need to be taken into account in determining a location for the station but have not proposed a specific site.
