Vol. 441 No. 1

Written Answers. - Donations to the Nation.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

30 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht whether he will introduce a scheme to encourage people to donate paintings and works of art to the nation.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar Question. No. 26, on 7 July 1993 in which I indicated that I am in principle in favour of the introduction of such a scheme to encourage people to donate paintings and works of art to the nation.

I indicated in that reply that I proposed to examine this issue, including schemes that exist in other countries, to establish whether a case can be made for their adoption in this country.

My Department is at present in the process of examining this matter but the Deputy will appreciate that it will be some time before I am in a position to report further on this issue.
