Vol. 443 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruits.

Peter Barry

Question:

20 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance if he will sanction the resources necessary for the intake of new cadets into the Defence Forces in 1994; if he has received a request for this sanction from the Department of Defence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Minister for Defence has asked for and received my approval for the holding of a cadet competition in 1994. Advertisements for cadetships have been placed in the national newspapers, and I understand the military authorities are proceeding with the normal processes associated with the competition. It is invariably the case that the small first year cost of taking on any cadets can be met from within the resources already allocated to the Department of Defence, and any cadet recruitment in 1994 will not require the allocation of additional resources to the Defence Vote.
