Question:

52 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the long term effects on private home ownership in the country, being brought about by the increasing number of contract workers who are constantly rejected by financial institutions for mortgages and who must live in rented accommodation for life.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 49 and 52 together.

I would be concerned if any practice by lending institutions unnecessarily hindered home ownership. I am not aware that such practices exist but, if the Deputy lets me have details of any instance of which he is aware, I will consider whether any action on my part is appropriate.
