Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Legislation on Insurance.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

93 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the plans, if any, he has to introduce further legislation, either alone or in consultation with the Department of Justice, to curtail spiralling insurance costs for community bodies and public authorities. [1263/94]

The cost of insurance, including that for community bodies and public authorities, is determined by the cost of claims. My Department is at present finalising proposals which seek to address the current relatively high cost of claims in this country as compared to competing economies.

Decisions on legislative initiatives to implement these proposals, which cover both the cost of personal injury compensation and the overhead costs associated with the settlement of personal injury claims, are a matter for the Government.
