Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - School Transport.

John Ellis

Question:

345 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education if her Department will provide transport for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo who attends Cregg House special school, Sligo. [3180/94]

Jim Higgins

Question:

362 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the reason a school bus which passes through Charlestown to Cregg House special national school, Rosses Point, Sligo, will not stop in Charlestown in order to collect a physically and mentally handicapped child (details supplied) who is attending the school in question; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3522/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 345 and 362 together.

Arrangements are currently being made to provide the pupil in question with special school transport.

Michael Noonan

Question:

346 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if appropriate transport will be supplied to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick attending a special school in County Limerick. [3217/94]

The special transport needs of the child in question have been reviewed and an alternative arrangement is being put in place.

The new arrangement will allow the child to travel directly to her school, without the need to transfer between buses on route. This new arrangement will be put in place as speedily as possible.

Jim Higgins

Question:

347 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the time at which primary school students (details supplied) are picked up in the morning for transportation to a school (details supplied) in County Mayo; the time at which they are picked up from the school in the evening; and the time at which each journey concludes. [3218/94]

I am informed by Bus Éireann, my Department's agent in the operation of the school transport scheme, that the times are as follows:

Morning pick-up

9.05 a.m.

Drop-off at school

9.25 a.m.

Evening pick-up

3.35 p.m.

Evening drop-off

3.59 p.m.

The service in question operates two runs on a first in, first home basis. The total travelling and waiting time for the children named by the Deputy is 1 hour 10 minutes a day. This is considered to be a reasonable standard of service in the context of the scheme as operated throughout the country.
