Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Middle East Peace Process.

Alan Shatter

Question:

19 Mr. Shatter asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the discussions, if any, that have taken place with the Government of Iran to urge it to support the Middle East peace process and to cease funding organisations such as Hamas which was responsible for the recent bombing outrage in Jerusalem; and the Government's policy regarding the continued support given by Iran to terrorist organisations. [12977/95]

The attack on the bus in Jerusalem on 21 August, which left six people, including the suicide bomber, dead and many more injured, was an appallingly inhumane act. The Government condemns in the strongest possible terms this and other acts of terrorism aimed at undermining the Middle East Peace Process.

I avail of my contacts with Iran to seek support for the Middle East Peace Process and the efforts of the international community to combat terrorism and I will do so again at the next available opportunity.

Both the question of support for the Peace Process and concern about allegations of Iranian support for terrorism are accorded priority in the context of the European Union's Critical Dialogue with Iran where these issues are raised regularly.
