Written Answers. - Language Classes.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

184 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education whether a language class will be provided in a school (details supplied) in County Tipperary; the proposed number of students that will be in this class; the means of entry to this class; the person or body that will be in charge; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11532/96]

Arrangements are being finalised for the establishment of a special class for specific speech and language disorder in the school in question with effect from September 1996.

The pupil teacher ratio for a special class for specific speech and language disorder is 8:1. Enrolment in the class will be determined by an advisory admission committee, which assesses the suitability of pupils for admission to the class. The admissions committee will be comprised of relevant professionals, including the school principal, class teacher, speech therapist assigned to the class and school's inspector, in addition to a speech therapist and psychologist nominated by the relevant health board.

The board of management of the school in question will have responsibility for this class.
