Vol. 470 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hydrogeological Survey.

Máirín Quill

Question:

95 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to have a comprehensive hydrogeological survey carried out in the Nenagh region of County Tipperary to establish exactly the degree of contamination of ground water in that area; his views on whether this is of crucial importance in matters of public health; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20133/96]

In view of reports about water quality problems found during investigations to establish a temporary water supply to Nenagh, I have requested the Environmental Protection Agency to look into the matter and, taking account of the findings, to advise me on the need for a hydrogeological survey of the area. The agency's investigation is proceeding and I await its advice.

I have taken steps to accelerate work on the Nenagh regional water supply scheme, with the result that water from Lough Derg should be available in February 1997, instead of May 1997. The supply situation to the town has improved significantly in the last week with the introduction of a temporary source which has been declared fit for drinking and culinary purposes.
