Vol. 474 No. 8

Written Answers. - Live Exports.

John Ellis

Question:

108 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the efforts, if any, he is making to have extra facilities provided for the export of live cattle to mainland Europe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4041/97]

The provision of ferries for the export of live cattle to mainland Europe is primarily a matter for the ferry companies themselves. However, I was pleased to be able to announce recently that an additional ferry service for livestock to mainland Europe would be introduced in the near future. In addition, ships which have been approved under the Diseases of Animals (Carriage of Cattle by Sea) Order, 1996 are, of course, entitled to bring cattle to mainland Europe.
