Vol. 476 No. 6

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Registrations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

63 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a breakdown on a monthly basis of the number of sales of motor vehicles to date; if he will give comparative figures for 1996, 1995, 1987, 1986 and 1985; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7838/97]

It is assumed that the Deputy's question refers to all new motor vehicle registrations. On the basis, I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the numbers of new motor vehicles registered in January-February for each of the relevant years are as follows:

Year

January

February

Total

1997

24,916

18,016

42,932

1996

20,992

16,723

37,715

1995

17,505

12,024

29,529

1987

9,710

7,097

16,807

1986

10,714

8,242

18,956

1985

9,810

8,941

18,751

The figures for the years 1995 to 1997 are the actual numbers of new vehicles registered with the Revenue Commissioners for the purposes of collecting VRT. Those for 1985 to 1987 are taken from CSO new motor vehicle registration statistics.
