Question:

416 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the schools which show the least desirable pupil-teacher ratios in primary and second level schools in Kildare North; the schools where the most desirable pupil-teacher ratios are achieved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27367/98]

I intend taking Questions Nos. 415 and 416 together.

There are 93 ordinary national schools in County Kildare. To determine the pupil teacher ratio in each individual school requires the retrieval of data relating to both enrolments and teacher allocation in every single school in the county. This process represents an inordinate demand in resources which cannot be justified.

The pupil teacher ratio at national level is in the order of 21.2:1 in the current year. Undoubtedly, there are schools in County Kildare which have a pupil teacher ratio in excess of this national level in the same way as there are likely to be some schools with a ratio below this level.

The pupil-teacher ratio for the voluntary secondary schools in County Kildare is as follows:

Cross and Passion, Kilcullen

14.00:1

St. Joseph's Academy, Kildare

14.29:1

Holy Family secondary school, Newbridge

14.38:1

Scoil Mhuire, Athy

14.57:1

Presentation secondary school, Kildare

15.15:1

Scoil Dara, Kilcock

15.38:1

Salesian College, Celbridge

15.39:1

Clongowes Wood College, Naas

15.52:1

Patrician College, Newbridge

15.77:1

Scoil Eoin, Athy

15.80:1

St. Wolstans, Celbridge

16.00:1

Convent of Mercy, Naas

16.15:1

C.B.S. Naas

16.16:1

St. Paul's secondary school, Monasterevin

16.23:1

Dominican College, Newbridge

17.94:1

The pupil teacher ratio for community and comprehensive schools in County Kildare is as follows:

Coláiste Chiaráin, Leixlip

16.74:1

Scoil Mhuire, Clane

16.65:1

My Department allocates staffing resources to second level schools under the control of vocational education committee's on a scheme basis. The pupil teacher ratio for the County Kildare VEC scheme is 15.5 : 1.
