Vol. 517 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disease Levels.

Alan Shatter

Question:

148 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the incidences of Crohn's disease in each of the past ten years. [9226/00]

As Crohn's disease is not a notifiable disease, comprehensive information on the number of people suffering from the condition is not available. For those with the condition who require hospitalisation, data are available from the hospital in-patient enquiry, HIPE system which records information on hospitalisations in all publicly funded acute hospitals. The data available in respect of 1994 to 1998 are set out in the following table. Prior to 1994 the system was not sufficiently comprehensive to report national totals reliably. The figures provided include day cases and in-patients. It should be noted that if patients are admitted more than once in a given year, each attendance is recorded separately in HIPE.
