At present the application referred to by the Deputy is being examined in the planning and building unit of my Department. A response will issue to the board of management of the school as soon as possible.

Austin Currie

Question:

307 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has for primary and secondary education in view of the proposed building of approximately 7,000 new houses in the Adamstown area of Lucan, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8560/01]

Trevor Sargent

Question:

347 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans in place to ensure that sufficient school places are available in the Lucan area over the next five years, particularly in relation to the development of 500 acres of land with a projected 8,000 houses at Adamstown, and the needs of groups like Lucan Educate Together and the existing gaelscoileanna for additional schools in the area. [8975/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 307 and 347 together.

My Department has reserved sites in the Adamstown area for a primary and a post-primary school, and the question of whether to proceed with the development of these schools is under active consideration at present. I understand that South Dublin County Council is in the course of preparing a proposed plan for Adamstown, which will assist my Department considerably in regard to school provision in that area. The plan is expected to be available towards the end of April 2001. A further site for a primary school has been reserved in the Griffeen/ Foxborough area.

Officials of my Department's planning section meet on a regular basis with the planning department of South Dublin County Council with a view to identifying the need for additional educational provision and reserving sites for schools where required. My Department is also in regular consultation with the existing school providers in Lucan, including Educate Together and gaelscoileanna concerning their needs. Where a shortage of pupil places is identified the appropriate response may be to provide an extension for an existing school or to establish a new school depending on the circumstances.
