Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment.

Austin Currie

Question:

150 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Defence if colour blindness is a condition which prevents membership of the Defence Forces; if so, if disbarment on such grounds has been challenged on human rights grounds; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9442/01]

The vision standards required for entry to the Defence Forces are laid down by the military authorities. For operational reasons vision requirements stipulate that all applicants must have normal colour vision. Accordingly, an applicant who is colour blind is ineligible for entry to the Defence Forces. I am not aware of any challenge to this on human rights grounds.
