Vol. 539 No. 2

Written Answers. - Treaty of Nice.

Ivor Callely

Question:

94 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the likely impact the rejection of the Nice treaty may have on economic growth; the effect on sup port and aid from the European Union; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18378/01]

It is widely accepted that Ireland's economic success in recent years has been based on our stability oriented macroeconomic policy, underpinned by social partnership. It is the Government's intention to continue with these policies.

It is my assessment that the rejection of the Nice treaty in the recent referendum should not have any material impact on Ireland's economic growth, at least in the short-term. Failure to follow through on EU enlargement could adversely affect growth prospects in the long term.

The rejection of the treaty does not affect the amount of Structural Funds and CAP funding for Ireland for the period 2000-06. The amounts for Ireland were agreed at the Berlin European Council in 1999 and remain unaltered.
