I welcome the publication of the Garda Síochána's Garda youth policy advisory group report as an important contribution to addressing the multifaceted problem of alcohol abuse among young people. The advisory group recognised that the problem relates to complex social and behavioural issues. Accordingly, the report's 15 recommendations are diverse in nature and require consideration by a range of State agencies.
I confirm that with respect to the recommendations relating specifically to matters within my functional remit, namely, the proof of age scheme and the use of mobile CCTV units, my Department is actively examining the proposals. Similarly, I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda Síochána is in the process of assessing the implications of the report for that organisation. I understand that the Garda authorities anticipate that the implementation of the report's recommendations will be prioritised for inclusion in the Garda policing plans for the year 2002 and beyond.
