174 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders recorded for the first nine months of 2001; and the number of murders recorded for the first nine months of 2000 and for the full year 2000. [24520/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that 40 murders were recorded for the first nine months of 2001. In the year 2000, 31 murders were recorded during the first nine months, and a total number of 39 were recorded for the whole year.
