Vol. 542 No. 3

Written Answers. - Aer Rianta.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

34 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she still favours private sector participation in Aer Rianta; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24147/01]

As I have stated on numerous previous occasions, my main concern in relation to whatever strategy is decided upon for Aer Rianta is that it is the correct strategy not just for the company itself and its employees but also for the users of the State airports.

I have also stated previously that I concur with the view that a strategy of providing, with suitable safeguards, for limited private sector participation in Aer Rianta would lead to the most beneficial outcome for all stakeholders. I am, however, conscious that private sector involvement in Aer Rianta raises policy issues which I and other Ministers need to reflect carefully upon.

I am sure that the Deputy will appreciate that, at the present time, given the dramatic impact of last month's terrorist attacks in the US on the global aviation industry, there is a range of other priorities concerning the aviation sector which are being urgently addressed by me and by the Government and by Governments throughout the world. While I will be focusing on these new priorities for the foreseeable future, I will return at the appropriate time to considering, in consultation with my Government colleagues, the stra tegic options for the future of Aer Rianta in the long-term.
