Vol. 542 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

50 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she is satisfied the enhanced commuter rail service serving the north Kildare towns of Kilcock, Maynooth, Leixlip and Confey is adequately meeting commuter needs with particular reference to frequency of service, safety standards and keeping to schedule; if her attention has been drawn to complaints of poor time-keeping, constant delays and poor quality rolling stock; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24329/01]

On 16 August 2001, Iarnród Éireann introduced a new expanded timetable which increased the capacity of the Dublin-Maynooth line by 100% at peak times. The company informs me that there have been some problems recently with wheel slip due to leaf fall. From Monday, 15 October, Iarnród Éireann has introduced rolling stock on the Maynooth line which can deposit grit onto the tracks when triggered by a mechanism which detects adverse rail conditions. This should help alleviate problems recently encountered by commuters.

In accordance with Iarnród Éireann's passenger charter, central traffic control and station staff have been instructed to ensure passengers are informed when delays occur and the estimated duration of same.

The company also informs me that a reduced speed restriction introduced over the Ryevale Aqueduct for essential works has been lifted and normal speed restrictions for the area have been restored.

John Bruton

Question:

51 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her views on whether the spur rail link from Clonsilla to Dunboyne, envisaged by the Dublin Transportation Office to be completed by 2006, will be completed by that date; and if not, the reason therefor. [21123/01]

The Dublin Transportation Office Strategy 2000-16 entitled, A Platform for Change, which is to be published shortly in its final form will recommend that a new rail line be constructed off the Maynooth line near Clonsilla via Dunboyne to Navan in the period 2006-10.

The strategy is under consideration in Iarnród Éireann and I have not received proposals from Iarnród Éireann in that regard.

Question No. 52 answered with Question No. 41.
