Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - Planning Issues.

John McGuinness

Question:

386 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the planning status of a lime kiln at Hebron Road Industrial Estate, Kilkenny; the purpose and plans for its future use; the cost of constructing the kiln; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17977/02]

The construction of this kiln, which is to be used to burn lime for conservation mortars and plasters, was undertaken by Dúchas at a cost of some €14,500, following advice from the planning authority that planning permission would not be required. The work also served as a training project for apprentices and assisted the recent successful international lime kiln forum held at Kilkenny Castle. Dúchas has now ascertained that a licence under the Air Pollution Act, 1997, will be required for the operation of the kiln and they are at present in discussion with Kilkenny County council about a formal licence application.
