Vol. 566 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Tony Gregory

Question:

627 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action the Garda authorities are taking to deal with the problem of drunken gangs harassing people in Griffith Park, Dublin 9; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11658/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that from 1 January 2003 to date, a total of four incidents of criminal damage were recorded in respect of Griffith Park. I understand that the gardaí have not received any complaints from members of the public in relation to harassment in the park. Griffith Park is patrolled regularly by beat and foot patrols, both uniform and plain clothes, with the northern portion policed by the H district and the remainder by the U district. Special anti-social patrols target this park and other parks at weekends and will continue to do so.

Question:

628 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of incidents involving vandalism to cars, theft of cars and house break-ins in the North Strand area adjacent to the East Wall Road, Dublin 3 to date in 2003; and the action the Garda are taking in this regard. [11659/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that during the period from 1 January 2003 to 2 May 2003, 16 incidents of criminal damage to cars and eight cases of unauthorised taking of vehicles were recorded in the North Strand area adjacent to the East Wall Road. Two cases of burglary were also recorded, both of which occurred just outside this particular area. I understand that a dedicated patrol van is being deployed in the East Wall-North Wall areas at specific times to counter these problems. In addition, foot patrols and detective units will continue to operate in the area, and it is the intention of the gardaí to increase the level of liaison with local residents and their community groups. Local Garda management have had a number of meetings with community groups in the area and further meetings are planned.
