Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Conor Lenihan

Question:

1135 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans in relation to the redevelopment of Tallaght Garda station; and if he will, in this context, consider establishing a sub-station in the Tallaght west area to ensure an even higher profile for policing in this area. [19962/03]

The Office of Public Works has been researching proposals, in consultation with South Dublin County Council, to maximise the development potential of the site of Tallaght Garda station. I am informed by that office that no firm decisions have yet been taken on the matter. I can inform the Deputy, however, that any redevelopment of the site will include the provision of a new Garda station which will meet all current and future requirements of the Garda in Tallaght.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the establishment of a second Garda station in Tallaght would necessitate placing additional gardaí on indoor administrative duties, and often such personnel can be utilised more effectively in providing a visible Garda presence on outdoor policing duties. Moreover, Garda clinics have been provided, in partnership with South Dublin County Council, in Killinarden, Jobstown, and Fettercairn-Brookfield and these clinics are staffed for a minimum of one hour, one day per week. A member of the housing staff of the council is present to deal with accommodation problems and anti social behaviour in the local authority areas. It should be noted that gardaí attached to Tallaght Garda station maintain continuous contact with each of these communities.
