Written answers

I am informed by the Garda authorities that An Garda Síochána makes appropriate use of the powers conferred on it by the Control of Horses Act 1996 to seize and detain stray horses.

The following table shows the number of incidents recorded, by Garda Division, relating to the control of horses in 2010 and in 2011 up to 26 April.

In 2010, An Garda Síochána expended €24,600 on the transport of animals of all categories to an animal pound and on veterinary expenses. Information on costs incurred in placing stray horses in an animal pound could only be provided by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of time and resources. The figures provided are operational and liable to change.
