EU Affairs Committee to discuss budgetary negotiations with Minister for European Affairs

26 Jun 2012, 15:57

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet the Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton TD tomorrow Wednesday at 11a.m.

The Committee will discuss the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), which will shape the EU’s budget between 2014 and 2020, with Minister Creighton.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “At a critical juncture for the European Union, tomorrow's exchange of views with Minister Creighton affords the Committee a valuable and timely opportunity exchange viewpoints on the crucial negotiations which will shape the EU budget from 2014 and 2020. We heard at last week’s meeting that, while the Danish Presidency has made progress on the negotiations, there remain wide gaps between the positions of Member States.”

“Of critical importance to Ireland is safeguarding CAP funding in the EU budgets in the coming years, to ensure our agri-food industry remains a driver of economic recovery. There is also an opportunity for cohesion funding to be channelled towards tackling unemployment, and particularly youth unemployment, in the coming years. We look forward to engaging with Minister Creighton tomorrow and, in turn, ensure a variety of perspectives from our cross party Committee can flow into these crucial EU budgetary negotiations.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 27 June 11 a.m. in Committee Room 1, Leinster House 2000.
