Committee on the Future of Healthcare to hear from Prof Allyson Pollock and ICGP

27 Sep 2016, 14:12

The Special Committee on the Future of Healthcare will continue its public hearings on devising a long-term health strategy for Ireland tomorrow, Wednesday, 28 September 2016.

The schedule for the meeting is:

Session A: 9am
Universal Healthcare and the NHS - Professor Allyson Pollock, University of London (presentation will be given via videolink)

Session B: 11am
Management of chronic care illness - Representatives from the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP)

Chair of the Committee, Roisin Shortall, says: “This week, we will continue our public hearings when we will hear for Professor Allyson Pollock, who is professor of public health policy and research at Queen Mary, University of London and was previously Director of the Centre for International Public Health Policy at the University of Edinburgh. She is a leading authority on public health and the implications of privatisation for public services.  As the Committee tasked with examining potential new models for health care in Ireland, with a remit to achieve cross-party consensus on a ten year strategy for health care and health policy in Ireland, it is important that we look at models of healthcare in operation in other countries and get the perspectives of international experts in the provision of healthcare. Therefore, we’re looking forward to hearing from Professor Pollock who has spoken and written extensively on public health care in the UK.

“Our second hearing of the day will see us meet with representatives from the Irish College of General Practitioners for a discussion on the Management of chronic care illness. The ICGP has called for increased funding to general practice to enable management of chronic illnesses in the community and to build general practice capacity which it says will reduce Outpatient Department and Emergency Department visits and bed occupancy. We will be keen to get their perspective on how best to devise a long-term health strategy and the model of healthcare it would like to see in operation in Ireland.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 1, Leinster House from 9am on Wednesday, 28 September 2016.
