Jobs Committee to discuss impact of ‘Brexit’ & how to mitigate negative effects

17 Oct 2016, 14:01

The Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 18th October 2016 at 5pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

17th October 2016

On the agenda will be the likely economic impact of Brexit with particular emphasis on jobs and enterprise and the steps being taken to mitigate these risks.
Representatives from Enterprise Ireland; IDA Ireland; and InterTrade Ireland will brief the Committee.

Committee Chair, Mary Butler TD, said, “The UK departure from the EU is arguably the biggest challenge facing Ireland. British Prime Minister Theresa May's confirmation of the date to trigger Article 50 by the end of March 2017 has raised concerns that Irish jobs could come under threat as the UK exits the EU. We have asked a number of stakeholder groups to address us tomorrow in order to discuss how best we can secure Irish jobs in the face of Brexit.

“Some of the issues facing Irish jobs include exporters’ concerns about the rate of the Sterling’s decline in value and the predicted spike in interest in Irish jobs from Britain-based applicants. Equally, we will be keen to discuss the possibilities for Ireland to encourage further foreign direct investment (FDI) due to the instability in Britain as a result of the referendum. Financial services and technology are just two of the industries identified as being particularly well placed to attract FDI.”

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
