Regional Development Committee to hear from social organisations on sustaining viable rural communities

22 Nov 2016, 10:28

The Committee on Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht will continue its hearings on sustaining viable rural communities tomorrow, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 when it meets with a number of organisations which have deep links with rural communities.

The Schedule for tomorrow’s meeting is:

Session A: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael; Irish Countrywomen's Association; Irish Men’s Sheds' Association; and Irish Rural Link.
Session B: Forum Connamara; Macra na Feirme; and Teagasc - Agriculture and Food Development Authority.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Peadar Tóibín said: “Tomorrow, the Committee will meet with a number of groups which have deep links and play a vital role in the social, cultural and economic life in rural towns and communities across the country. Social organisations are vital in binding communities together, providing forums for people to meet and socialise and in helping to address isolation and marginalisation. As we continue to focus on what it takes to sustain a viable rural community, we’re looking forward to hearing from organisations that are often at the heart of communities in towns, villages and parishes around Ireland and getting their perspectives and insight on the measures necessary to develop, strengthen and grow rural communities.”

This meeting will start at 9am, tomorrow, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
