Northern Ireland Ministers to appear before Jobs Committee

5 Dec 2016, 15:07

The likely economic impact of Brexit will be on the agenda when the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation meets tomorrow.

5th December 2016

Mr. Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, Northern Ireland Minister for Finance and Mr. Chris Hazzard, Northern Ireland Minister for Infrastructure will travel from Stormont to brief the committee on some of the steps being taken in Northern Ireland to mitigate the risks to jobs and the economy.

Committee Chairperson, Mary Butler TD, said, “Tomorrow’s meeting with our colleagues from the Stormont Assembly is a significant one. As we deal with the result of the Brexit referendum, cooperation and communication will be vital to ensuring the strategic interests of the island of Ireland.

“With this in mind, Ministers Ó’Muilleoir and Hazzard will update us on their plans for mitigating the negative effects of Brexit on the economies of the North and South. We have many important issues to discuss, including trade, the border and job creation and so as a committee, we very much welcome this meeting.”

“On Thursday, our committee also meet informally with members of the Economy Committee of the Northern Ireland Assembly to further discuss Brexit and how we can protect strategic interests north and south of the border.”

Prior to tomorrow’s meeting, the Committee will carry out scrutiny of EU legislative proposal  COM(2016)662.

The meeting will commence tomorrow, Tuesday, 6th December at 11am in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
