Impact of Brexit on Newry border region to be discussed by Good Friday Committee

The Committee will resume discussions on the implications of Brexit for the Good Friday Agreement and its Institutions.

The following witnesses will address the Committee:

•    Dr. Conor Patterson, Chief Executive, Newry and Mourne Co-Operative and Enterprise Agency;
•    Mr. Peter Conway, CEO, Warrenpoint Harbour; and
•    Mr. Michael Blaney, Managing Director, Autoline Insurance Group.

Committee Chairperson, Kathleen Funchion TD, said, “Our witnesses will tell us how the dissolution of the border as a barrier to movement of goods and people revitalised the local economies around the Newry border region. They will discuss their significant concerns about what Brexit could mean for the area in terms of trade, access to ports and EU funding. Businesses in the North are understandably concerned about the pace of the changes that Brexit will bring, as well as about the insecurity and nervousness it could create in the markets.”
