25 Sep 2017, 02:43

The Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands will hear from Alan Esslemont, Director General of TG4 at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 26 September 2017.

Chairperson of the Committee Catherine Connolly TD: “Tomorrow, the Committee will meet with Alan Esslemont, Director General of TG4 to address the Committee on a number of issues, including the challenges of broadcasting in Ireland through the medium of Irish, the duties of TG4 under the legislation and the provision of subtitles in Irish and English.

Our meeting tomorrow builds on previous meetings where we discussed the challenges and opportunities facing Irish language broadcasters across the island of Ireland and the support they need to meet their objectives and obligations.

Television remains a very important means of communication and it is essential that a vibrant, accessible and sustainable TV service is provided to Irish language viewers and listeners. Therefore we’re looking forward to our meeting with Mr Esslemont to discuss the challenges and opportunities of providing an Irish language broadcast service.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 26 September, 2017.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
