Ombudsman for Children to appear before Children & Youth Affairs Committee

The Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs will meet tomorrow at 9.30am in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.

Agenda:

Session 1: Cyber Security for Children and Young Adults (resumed) [Representatives from Facebook]

Session 2: Consideration of the Ombudsman for Children’s Annual Report 2016 [The Ombudsman for Children]

Committee Chair, Alan Farrell TD, said today, “In the first part of our meeting tomorrow, we will return to the matter of cyber security for children and young adults. Parents are concerned about the safety of their children online and the Committee is pleased to engage directly with Facebook tomorrow on issues such as the level of education provided to users of Facebook with regard to reporting tools. We will also seek their views on the proposed establishment of an Office of a Digital Safety Commissioner and what role such a Commissioner might play.”

“In the second part of the meeting, we will meet with the Ombudsman for Children to discuss the Office’s latest annual report. Committee Members will want to discuss the  complaints process and the figures around how many complaints and of what nature were received in 2016. Incidents in Oberstown and the impact of the housing crisis on children are likely to be discussed also.”
