Students to discuss cyber bullying with Children & Youth Affairs Committee

6 Feb 2018, 10:14

The Committee on Children and Youth Affairs will hear directly from young people about their perspectives on cyber security and cyber bullying.

Eight young people, drawn from Newbridge College and Comhairle na nÓg, will appear before the Committee when it sits tomorrow at 9.30am in Committee Room 1.

Committee Chair, Alan Farrell TD, said today, “Cyber bullying and cyber safety are relatively new but growing problems for young people. The Committee is anxious to hear directly from young people themselves in order to ensure that their voices are heard in developing policies to combat issues that manifestly affect them. Our meeting comes just one day after Internet Safety Day (6th February), so this is a timely opportunity to hear from young people about the issues that matter to them; how supported they feel in combatting cyber bullying and their ideas on how young people can appropriately use the internet. We have held a number of meetings on the topic of cyber security, but tomorrow’s meeting is arguably our most important in the series. Greater awareness amongst children of cyber safety is vital; young people also need to be empowered to seek help from adults and their peers.”
