Irish Language Committee to hear from Coimisinéir Teanga

20 Mar 2018, 01:21

The Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands will hear from the Coimisinéir Teanga today, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 as part of its hearings on the Heads of the Official Languages (Amendment) Bill 2017.

Chairperson of the Committee Catherine Connolly TD: “The Committee will meet with the Coimisinéir Teanga to discuss the forthcoming Official Languages (Amendment) Bill 2017. We have already received a number of submissions and met with a number of witnesses as part of our ongoing pre-legislative scrutiny of the Bill. The submissions received and the evidence heard from witnesses have included proposals that extra functions and powers should be given to the Coimisinéir Teanga, and the Committee wishes to discuss these proposals with him. Members are very interested in hearing the views of the Coimisinéir Teanga on the proposed legislation as the Committee considers that his input is essential to its consideration of this topic.”

This meeting will take place at 4pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
