Scouting Ireland chief executive to appear before Children & Youth Affairs Committee

8 May 2018, 16:56

The chief executive of Scouting Ireland, John Lawlor, is scheduled to appear Wednesday before the Joint Committee on Children & Youth Affairs to answer questions about governance and child protection policy within the voluntary organisation, following a series of allegations.

Mr. Lawlor is expected to address Committee members at 4:15 p.m. in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.

The Committee led by Chairman Alan Farrell TD invited the Scouting Ireland chief executive to answer questions, given the organisation’s receipt of public funding and its work with approximately 40,000 children and young people throughout the State.

Deputy Farrell said: "Scouting Ireland's appearance before the Joint Committee is an opportunity to set the record straight with regard to child protection and management structures within the organisation. The Joint Committee has a primary role in ensuring that the policies of the State are rigidly observed and that public monies promote standards of excellence.

“It is my sincere hope that over the course of the coming months, Scouting Ireland can regain public trust in this valued organisation, which has a vital role in communities throughout our country. In achieving this, it is my belief that public engagement on the part of Scouting Ireland is critical at this juncture.”
