Irish Language Committee resumes hearings on challenges facing childcare centres in Gaeltacht areas

3 Jul 2018, 14:16

The Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands will meet with representatives of Comhar na Naíonraí Gaeltachta; Ionad Cúram Leanaí Ráth Chairn, Co na Mí; Ionad Tacaíocht Teaghlaigh Iarthar Dhuibhneach – Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne, Co Chiarraí on Wednesday, 4 July 2018 to consider the challenges facing childcare centres that operate through the medium of Irish and which are located in Gaeltacht areas.

This is the second time the Committee will consider this topic in 2018, having previously met with representatives of Crann Taca/Comharchumann Shailearna Teo, Co na Gaillimhe on 6 February 2018.

Committee Chair Catherine Connolly said: “The Committee wishes to consider the opportunities and challenges facing organisations and workers in this sector, and how best parents who send their children to all-Irish speaking childcare centres, both inside and outside the Gaeltacht, can be assisted in doing so.  The Committee recognises the extra challenges parents face in this regard, and it wants to ensure that these extra challenges are tackled effectively.  The Committee also recognises that childcare and education through the medium of Irish should not impose extra expenses on parents, and that any extra expenses should be mitigated to the greatest extent possible. Tomorrow, we will examine the issue in greater detail.”

This meeting will take place at 4.15pm on Wednesday, 4 July 2018 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
