Good Friday Committee to meet for engagement with the All-Island Cancer Research Institute

22 Feb 2023, 15:00

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet on Thursday February 23rd with the All-Island Cancer Research Institute.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 13:30-16:30.

The following representatives are due to appear:

  • Professor William Gallagher (UCD and Co-Lead of AICRI)
  • Professor Maeve Lowery (TCD and Co-Lead of AICRI)
  • Professor Mark Lawler (QUB and Co-Lead of AICRI)
  • Eibhlin Mulroe (CEO, Cancer Trials Ireland and Member of AICRI Steering Committee)
  • Aidan McCormack (Patient Advocate and Member of AICRI Steering Committee)

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said: “Cancer is a pernicious disease which impacts every family across the island of Ireland. A core mission of the institute is a more collaborative approach to cancer research and training between the Departments of Health in Ireland and Northern Ireland; and the US National Cancer Institute.”

“This tripartite collaboration has its roots within the Good Friday Agreement, with an Implementation Committee now in place following re-invigoration of this initiative in March 2021.”

“We welcome the opportunity to hear what progress has been made since this new initiative and how the committee can help to support the group’s aims.”
