Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to hear update on Tenant in Situ process

20 Mar 2023, 17:15

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 21 March, for an update on the Tenant in Situ process from representatives of the City and County Managers Association (CCMA) and officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Ahead of the meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House. Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “The Tenant in Situ scheme is one of a number of measures under the Housing for All programme aimed at preventing tenants from becoming homeless. It allows local authorities to buy properties that have been put up for sale by the landlord where there is an existing tenant in receipt of the Housing Assistance Payment.

“The Committee welcomes this opportunity to hear an update on implementing this scheme, amid reports that local authorities have only purchased a small number of such properties that they have been offered by landlords and for which there is approved funding. This is a matter of concern given the Government’s decisions to end the eviction ban on March 31 and increase the number of homes local authorities can purchase by 1,500. Members look forward to discussing these and related matters with the representatives of the city and county managers and the officials from the Department.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meetings in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
