Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Accidents.

7.

asked the Minister for Labour if there has been a decrease in the number of industrial accidents in the last year.

The number of notified industrial accidents in 1973 was 3,286 as compared with 2,872 in 1972. The increase in the number of accidents coincided with the increase in industrial production, the accident rate remaining the same as in the previous year.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to say if the increase in accidents relates to any specific type of accident or any specific type of industry?

As I understand the law about industrial accidents, an industrial accident is defined as being something which either has fatal results or for at least three days keeps an employee out of the work he was doing before the accident. I have a long table, which I am sure the Minister would make available to the Deputy, in respect of a large range of types of employment, giving the accidents in 1972 and those in 1973. I also have information about fatalities in each of these years.

I should like a copy of that.

I have only one copy but I am sure the Minister will make a copy available to the Deputy.
