Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Health Hazards.

8.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has evolved plans to deal with health hazards in industry such as noise, dust, fumes, radiation and toxic chemicals.

As the Minister informed the Deputy on the 19th February, 1974, in reply to a question by him, he is having regulations drafted in consultation with the Minister for Health to deal with excessively high noise levels.

The provisions of section 58 of the Factories Act, 1955, are specifically aimed at protecting workers from injurious, offensive or excessive dust, fumes or other impurities.

The protection of workers from radiation hazards is governed by two regulations made in 1972 in respect of both sealed and unsealed sources of radiation.

The protection of workers from hazards associated with toxic chemicals is dealt with in a series of regulations. The Minister is examining a number of these at present with a view to updating them where necessary.
