Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate.

196.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that calcium ammonium nitrate 26 per cent is being imported into this country packed in bags clearly marked Nítrigin Éireann Teo. and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A licence under the Merchandise Marks Acts was issued last month to Nítrigin Éireann Teo. for the importation of 5,000 tons of CAN in NET's own bags.

NET were pleased to locate this supply of fertiliser in the UK as its purchase would help them to meet their customers' demands. Because of the scarcity of bags, the other party to the transaction would not sell the fertiliser unless bags were supplied by NET. The granting of the required licence under the Merchandise Marks Acts to facilitate this import was clearly in the national interest.
