Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - UK Steel Exports Restriction.

197.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the effect from the employment point of view that the recently imposed restrictions on the export of steel from the UK is likely to have on Irish industry, with particular reference to engineering.

When the restrictions referred to were being imposed appropriate representations were made in Brussels and London, both at official level and by me personally, to see that the special interests of Irish steel users would be recognised in the operation of the controls.

As a result of these representations and other steps taken, and following consultation with the Confederation of Irish Industry and other interests concerned, I am satisfied that the restrictions referred to will have no more than a marginal effect on Irish industry, including the engineering industry.
