Question:

53 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the overseas investments made by a person (details supplied) conform with all exchange control regulations; if loans made by that person which have ended up in a Cyprus bank also conform with such regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 52 and 53 together.

As confidentiality is of paramount importance in dealings with persons and companies in matters relating to exchange controls, it would be inappropriate for me to release information about individual cases.

Estimates of direct and portfolio overseas investments by Irish residents in 1988 and 1989 are as follows:

1988

1989

£ million

Direct Investment

533

593

Portfolio Investment

144

1,137

It is to be noted that these are gross figures which do not take account of inward capital flows for direct and portfolio investment in Ireland.
