Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Complaints against Garda.

Tony Gregory

Question:

254 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will give details of all complaints of injuries made during June 1996 by persons questioned, detained and/or charged by the Garda, including complaints of injuries made by persons (details supplied); the outcome of the Garda investigation into these complaints; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13975/96]

Complaints of the kind referred to in the question can be made to the Garda Síochána Complaints Board or to a member of the Garda Síochána in accordance with the provisions of section 4 of the Garda Síochána Complaints Act, 1986. I am informed by the Garda authorities that particulars of such complaints made to members of the Force during the months of June, 1996 are not readily available and could not reasonably be compiled in time for inclusion in this reply.

With regard to the details supplied by the Deputy, the Garda authorities inform me that a complaint of injuries has been received on behalf of the first named person and is being investigated by a Garda chief superintendent. They inform me that a Garda superintendent has been appointed to investigate a complaint of injuries made on behalf of a person bearing the other surname mentioned.
