Europe Day 2024

On 9 May every year EU member states celebrate Europe Day. On the anniversary of the signing of the Schuman declaration in 1950, this is a day of reflection on the co-operation, prosperity and peace that has come about through the European project.

This year, Europe Day takes place as citizens across the continent prepare to vote in elections for their representatives in the European Parliament.

#UseYourVote in electing your European Parliament

Democracy in Europe is a gift passed to us from previous generations but it must be maintained, and the most effective way to do this is by voting. Take the opportunity on 7 June to #UseYourVote as Ireland elects its MEPs.

In celebrating Europe Day this year, the European Parliament Office in Dublin is partnering with the Houses of the Oireachtas to light up Leinster House and other locations to remind people of the importance of voting.

What do we think about Europe?

The European Commission Representation in Ireland publishes the Eurobarometer Report for Ireland and the latest edition is from Autumn 2023.

The report covers the core themes of:

  • Trust in the EU and EU direction for the future
  • Attitudes towards immigration and EU enlargement
  • Important contextual issues including key national concerns such as housing and the cost of living, financial difficulties and the EU response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine
  • Trust in the media

The findings indicate:

  • 76% of Irish people have a positive view of the EU, up 2 percentage points on the previous bulletin.
  • 83% of Irish citizens are optimistic about the future of the EU, the highest across the EU27.
  • 57% of Irish people trust the EU, down from 64% in spring 2023 compared to the EU average of 47%.
  • 62% of Irish people claim to feel informed on European matters
  • For Irish people, the most important issue facing Ireland is housing, with 56% citing this as a key concern, down from 61% in spring 2023.

The European Movement Ireland's EU poll has been updated for 2024 and continues providing insight into Ireland's relationship with the EU.

The findings indicate:

  • Although the vast majority in both the Republic of Ireland (84%) and Northern Ireland (76%) believe the Republic of Ireland should remain a member of the EU, there is a slight decline in support since the 2023 survey was conducted.
  • The 2024 results indicate a significant decline in agreement that the EU is moving in the right direction.
  • Nearly half of respondents in both jurisdictions believe that the EU's performance is strongest in the area of trade, at 46% in the Republic of Ireland and 55% in Northern Ireland.
  • More than half of people in both jurisdictions support more countries joining the EU.

EEC membership, 14 July 1966

“If the Government fail to pursue this aim as thoroughly and as efficiently as we think is desirable, we will be pressing them from behind…It will do no harm to our position in Brussels and in this country if it is seen that this House is concerned about this matter.”

“Surely it is self-evident that if we were to remain outside the Community we would be conferring on the Border the status of a frontier, both economic and political, between ourselves and the rest of Europe.”
